We are well into the heart of summer and the heat can be overwhelming, and that is for the many fortune ones that go from their air-conditioned car, to their air-conditioned office and to their air-conditioned home.  For those homeless living on the street it can be a matter of life or death.  Local 14 coordinated with several of our employers to donate cases of water to Catholic Charities to be disbursed to the homeless.  Catholic Charities put an emergency call out to replenish their water supply and we want to thank the following individuals and companies for assisting in the coordination of the donations: Kyle Bohan the Operations Director at Breakthru Beverage, Valerie McKinney the Operations Director at Reyes Coca-Cola, Greg Kiemsisty the Director of Operation at Johnson Brothers, Katy Grant the HR Manager at Nevada Beverage and John Madden the Warehouse Director at Southern Glaziers Wine and Spirits.

The Local 14 Health Fair day at Wet-n-Wild was a huge success with everyone having a great day at the water park.  Several of our members went home with some great prizes donated by the Local, Zenith and our employers.  We are looking forward to next year’s Wet-n-Wild day!

Recently our members at the City of Henderson overwhelmingly ratified a two-year extension to their current CBA that includes pay increases, no increase to the members insurance contribution rate and a new retiree health benefit that will be paid for by the City.  We want to thank the members of our negotiation staff for an exemplary job in representing their fellow members interests.

Blue-collar employees at the Town of Pahrump voted in a representational election for Local 14 to be their representative.  We will begin negotiations soon with the City and look forward to working with our committee towards their first collective bargaining agreement.

The Nevada Supreme Court finally heard the oral arguments for our Clark County School District support staff representational case.  The State of Nevada Attorney General’s office made our argument before the court that the Employee Management Relations Board had the legal right to change the election standards.  After winning two elections for the right to represent the 12,000 members of the support staff but being denied due to a state law that required receiving a super-majority vote of the bargaining unit the EMRB made a change to a majority voting standard.  The Teamsters subsequently won another election and were certified the representative only for the current association to appeal the matter to the Nevada Supreme Court.  The Court is deciding if the EMRB had the authority to make the change and followed the proper steps.  We anticipate receiving a favorable decision soon from the Supreme Court and will then begin the task of representing these individuals.

We have several important events coming up over the next several months.  The Local will be hosting a Stewards Seminar towards the end of September.  Once we have finalized a date we will mail notifications to all our stewards.  In appreciation of all the hard work our stewards perform we will be hosting a Steward Appreciation Banquet on the evening of October 6th, invitations will be mailed.  In cooperation with Zenith American Solutions the local will be hosting our annual Flu Shot Clinic on October 6 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Also, as a reminder there will be no general membership meeting till the month of September.  Please mark you calendars for these events.

We want to congratulate Hector Rios for winning a college scholarship courtesy of Joint Council 41.  Hector plans to study locally at UNLV after racking up a nice GPA and participating in tennis and bowling.  He is a skilled and certificated cabinetmaker and an Eagle Scout.  His dad is Hector A. Rios, a night warehouseman at Nevada Beverage.

The Local is currently working on an application for the use and convenience of its members.  We are hoping the application will be available through the app stores in 90 days.  We will also be introducing an all new Facebook page for the Local.  Once we have the app up and running you will be able to make address, phone number, email and beneficiary changes through the application but until then don’t forget to update your personal information with the Local.  We are looking forward to being able to communicate with our members in a new modern venue.

We would like to extend our condolences and prayers to the family of Kyle Eng who recently passed away unexpectedly.  Mr. Eng was a member and had worked at Anderson Dairy for 31 years and then continued his affiliation with the Local when he went to work at the City of Las Vegas as a corrections officer.  Mr. Eng was honored with a full law enforcement procession for his funeral.

Local 14 would like congratulate J.R. Gonzales and his wife, Grecia, of Core-mark on the birth of their son; Manny Castalon and his wife, Carolina, of Nevada Beverage on the birth of their daughter, born in July and to Bernando Sanchez on his marriage to Veronica on May 19!
