The Importanct of the Teamsters/Labor Movement
Labor is getting hit the hardest this Local has ever seen in its history. Because of budget cuts throughout the state and the Governor not wanting to raise taxes, they are going after our public sector jobs. We are continuing to do everything possible to fight back.
I would like to take this opportunity to educate our members on the political endorsement process. Our Local participates in the Southern Nevada Central Labor Council that is made up of a variety of labor unions. This council allows us to be part of the collective process that impacts labor unions representing hard-working Nevada families. All candidates that run for office are interviewed to discuss labor issues such as collective bargaining, and issues that impact our everyday life. We want candidates that understand and support labor issues.
This past election cycle for the municipal races we spent 13 hours interviewing 30 candidates. The candidate must receive a majority vote by the number of unions that are participating to receive our endorsement. This information is then presented to the full Central Labor Council for a vote. Each individual union can also do its own endorsement process.
That is the process, but, it is even more important that the Local have a showing of support from the rank and file membership. Please let me express the importance of strength in numbers and how they can make a difference. We need to take back what everybody wants to take from us, the hard-working Teamsters. We will always stand up for good working conditions, good pay and health insurance. Please help bring solidarity back into the workplace and to our Union.
