Passing of Larry Griffith

It is with great sadness that we must inform you of the passing of Local 14 Secretary-Treasurer, Larry R. Griffith.  Mr. Griffith had been a long-time Teamster working his way from rank-and file to his current position.  Larry had been a Teamster for over 55 years. He started his Teamsters’ career immediately following his service in the armed services. He became a shop steward as a driver at a union car-haul facility and in 1968 he made his way to Las Vegas where he worked as an organizer.  Larry was then elected as President of Local 631. After his time at Local 631, Larry worked for the IBT, as an organizer.  Larry became a business agent at Local 14 in 2002.  Larry progressed from a business agent, to serving on the Local 14 executive board, to eventually serving as the vice president and then president.  In 2009 Larry became the Secretary-Treasurer of Local 14 and he continued his journey for the past 4 terms as the principle officer.

Among Larry’s biggest victories has been the undertaking of the school district campaign which had been an on-going fight for nearly the past 20 years.  He recently negotiated an agreement with the ESEA and CCSD for Teamsters to represent over 4,000 school district employees.  Larry’s determination and passion for the members have always been among his greatest strengths.  Last year Larry was the driving force behind opening two medical clinics that are accessible by all members in the Local 14 Health & Welfare Trust.  This provided Local 14 members with vital access to primary health care at virtually no cost to the member.  One of the medical clinics will be renamed in his honor to forever be a reminder of his dedication to the membership.   Larry was a very strong advocate for Local 14’s members to make sure that they had dignity and justice in the workplace.

I know you will join us in keeping his friends and family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

General membership meetings for the Local will begin Thursday, September 17th, at 6:30 p.m. at the union hall.  You will be required to wear a mask and social distancing will be observed.  Additionally, due to COVID concerns, we will not be serving dinner.  Looking forward to see everyone.

Help support our Teamsters CCSD Support Staff brothers and sisters by clicking on the link below to sign a petition.  The petition requests that the Nevada Governor allow, for this year only, 9 and 10-month employees to apply for unemployment during the summer months.  With the effects of the COVID-19 virus expected to linger it will be nearly impossible for these employees to obtain supplemental employment this summer.   Please click and sign to support your fellow Teamsters Local 14 members.
